What is Arthritis?


Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves irritation, soreness, redness, and swelling. The word Arthritis is derived from a Greek words arthro which means joint and it is means inflammation. Inflammation is defensive action of tissue to irritation, injury, or infection, characterized by pain, redness, swelling, and loss of function in some cases. The major issue with people suffering from Arthritis is joint pain often localized to the joint area which is affected, the pain is mostly caused due to the inflammation.

Symptoms:

The Symptoms observed when a person is suffering from Arthritis included swelling, stiffness of joint, pain around the joint, fever, feeling of tiredness, weight loss, poor sleep etc
Forms of Arthritis:
There are many forms of Arthritis and the most common forms are Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Lipus, Juvenile Arthritis and Gout.

Osteoarthritis:

This form of arthritis is observed in middle and old age people, this is classified as a joint disease which affects mostly the cartilage tissue, which is a connective tissue found in many parts of human body including the joint between the bones. The cartilage tissue is not as hard as bone but flexible and stiffer than muscle. In Osteoarthritis upper most layer of the cartilage tissue breaks down and wears out which allows bones under cartilage to rub against each other causing swelling, irritation, pain and even loss of motion.

Rheumatoid Arthritis:

This form of arthritis is mostly observed at the age of 40 but can be affected by rheumatoid arthritis at any age, it is usually a chronic disease which attacks the flexible joints and sometimes organs. It causes pain, Stiffness, swelling and sometimes joints destruction. Around 1% of world's population are affected by rheumatoid arthritis and women are affected three times more than men.

Gout:

This form of arthritis occurs when the uric acid in the blood crystallizes and deposits as sharp crystals in joints surrounding tissues. Around 2 million in united states are suffering from gout.

Lupus:

Lupus is same as the rheumatoid arthritis, in which the joint tissue is affected but in lupus the attack might also affect blood, organs, skin and nervous system. It is observed mostly during the early adult years. The affect of lupus is seen 10 times more in women compared to men.

Juvenile arthritis:

This form of arthritis is most commonly seen in children s and should be diagnosed before the age of 16. Juvenile arthritis can affect the eye, skin and gastrointestinal area also. The common symptoms observed in Juvenile arthritis are joint inflammation, joint contraction, joint damage and variation in growth.

Psoriatic arthritis:

This form of arthritis is mostly seen in people who have chronic skin condition , early diagnosis is recommended for this arthritis because prolonged inflammation can cause joint damage. The symptoms seen are pain, swelling, stiffness, changes to the nail and pain in the area of sacrum the lower back.

Treatment for Arthritis:


There is some pain relief for Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis and treatment vary depending on the type of arthritis and may include physical therapy, change in lifestyle like exercise and weight control, medication and joint replacement surgery.
